Latin America in Global Intellectual History:
Rethinking the Peripheral Condition

Tuesday, 21 June 2022, 7.30 pm, diffrakt | centre for theoretical periphery

Conversation with
Lara Hofner | Ian Merkel | Clara Ruvituso

What are the specificities of Latin American thinking with regard to global intellectual life? What kinds of contributions have Latin American thinkers made to what has come to be called “theory”? In conversation with Lara Hofner, Ian Merkel and Clara Ruvituso will explore in what ways a peripheral – or, more accurately, semi-peripheral – condition may in fact have provided a privileged vantage point for theoretical innovation: Ian will start from his work on Brazilian intellectuals and the development of the French social sciences, and Clara will enter the dialogue across her work on the European receptions of (mainly) Latin American dependency theory.

Pandemic: The event will be held in accordance with current COVID-19 regulations. The room is equipped with air filtration devices, but given the persistent viral situation, we would also like to ask you, if possible, to test yourselves with a rapid test ahead of the event.
