Conversation with
Marie Beckmann | Gabriel Menotti
Why are movies so messy to deal with from a curational perspective? And how are they produced and take shape in and through (sub)cultural practices of exhibition and distribution? Gabriel Menotti addresses these and other questions in his most recent book Movie Circuits: Curatorial Approaches to Cinema Technology, where he attempts to grasp media in the making. Starting from the book and many examples, Gabriel will, in conversation with Marie Sophie Beckmann, delve into the underbelly of cinema in order to explore how images circulate and apparatuses crystallise across different material formations. The indisciplinary experience of curators and projectionists provides a means to suspend traditional film studies and engage with the medium as it happens, as a continuing, self-differing mess. From contemporary art exhibitions to pirate screenings, research and practice come together in a call to reinvent the medium from within.
