Screening and conversation with
José Lingna Nafafé | Juliana M. Streva
Where can one escape in a system where there is no outside? How can fugitivity be choreographed from within? Unearthing the spiraling of time, Juliana Streva’s experimental short film Quilombo, Continuum (23 mins, 2023) invites to listen and think nearby anticolonial choreographies, legacies, and tactics of quilombo from the territory now known as Brazil. In an effort to challenge national imaginaries and archives, the film interrupts the myth of racial democracy to enable other stories to be heard. By engaging with Black radical traditions and ongoing political struggles, the film assembles counter-narratives to speculate on future abolitions and quilombo world-making – in the words of Beatriz Nascimento, “a possibility in the days of destruction” (1977).
Following the screening, Juliana Streva will be in conversation with José Nafafé to talk about the histories and presents of quilombo – and which possibilities for liberation a marooning imagination may still offer today.
