BOUND WITH THE LIVING THE ARCHIVE ROOM is a series of three performative séances. We will conjure the stories and interconnected ideas within a small collection of objects, all linked to the narratives of textiles, crafts, and the women who created, concealed, and learned from them, as well as the lost worlds that are captured in them. BOUND WITH THE LIVING THE ARCHIVE ROOM unfolds as a series of gatherings, where we weave connections with the past through séances, creating non-linear and circular histories. At the heart of each gathering is a specific object that bore witness to the lives and loves of individuals and communities, capturing the imperial injustices they endured. In these sessions, the medium acts as an historian, calling forth entities from the occult to manifest through our inquiries. Their stories unravel, resonating with dedicated experts at the table, the performers hosting the event, and the attentive audience surrounding the act. As we resurrect the stories of injustice, we find ourselves in the clutches of current atrocities and relentless onslaught. The echoes of historical wrongs are resurrected with the urgent struggles of today, creating a discord that almost drowns our attempts to breathe life into forgotten tales. Past and present collide and condense, not in a harmonious choreography, but in a jarring clash that threatens to bury us beneath its weight.
The central objects include:
1) A crocheted item crafted by Nazira Rizeq Jarjoura (1892-1954), who lived and passed away in Nazareth, Palestine.
2) A jacket and a pocket book made and inscribed by Ida Rzechte and her daughter Anna Krystyna Paulina Żuławska (1918-2008), Jews from Warsaw, Poland.
Through these handmade textile pieces – a crocheted piece, a jacket, and a pocket book – we will invoke from the occult those who fashioned them, along with the stories of those who surrounded them. Our exploration will delve into their lives, dreams, and the imperial violence they witnessed.
BOUND WITH THE LIVING THE ARCHIVE ROOM is part of the project Recalling History, an ongoing performative research project by Hagar Ophir together with Juna Suleiman.
